Activation Lock: How It Works and How to Turn It Off

Activation Lock turns on automatically when you set up Find My.* After it's turned on, Apple securely stores your Apple ID on its activation servers and links it to your device. Your Apple ID password or device passcode is required before anyone can turn off Find My, erase your device, or reactivate and use your device.

Mark As Lost locks your screen with a passcode and lets you display a custom message with your phone number to help you get it back. You can also remotely erase your device if needed. Your custom message continues to display even after the device is erased.

Sometimes, on acquiring a used or refurbished iPhone, you could run into an issue where iCloud Activation Lock is enabled on a device. Intended as a security feature, Activation Lock is part of Find My, helping device owners to lock down their iPhone or iPad and to prevent others from being able to gain access, or even reuse the device once found.

A more likely scenario is that the iPhone or iPad was sold on, and the lock was activated, but the original owner cannot be contacted to remove iCloud activation lock. It is usually recommended for device sellers to completely wipe the hardware and disassociate their accounts, but sometimes this doesn't happen.

The activation lock iPhone bypass is not the only way that the software could be used, as it can also be employed for various other activation error problems. For example, activating an iPhone with a very old iOS version or if the device is locked to a different carrier.

As PassFab Activation Unlocker is available for both Windows and Mac, there are detailed processes available for both operating systems. Instructions to bypass iCloud activation lock are available for using the tool are also available via PassFab's website.

On connecting your iPhone, the PassFab Activation Unlocker will detect it and download a jailbreaking tool. It will then ask for a USB flash drive to be inserted, which the tool will wipe and create into a bootable drive.

The PassFab Activation Unlocker is a handy tool to remove iCloud account from iPhone activation in these particular circumstances. If all other avenues to fix the problem have been exhausted, it's a handy tool to unlock iCloud activation lock on your device.

PassFab Activation Unlocker is priced at $29.95 for a one-month license on Windows, $39.95 for one year, and $49.95 for a lifetime license, affecting one PC and 5 devices. On macOS, a one-month license is $39.95, a one-year license is $59.95, and the lifetime license is $69.95.

Apple has long fought the secondary market and independent repair shops. After years of selling people expensive repair plans and fighting the right to repair, the company has begun to relent. In 2021, it announced it would begin telling people how to fix their own phones and selling them the parts to do so. But the piles of perfectly useable but permanently locked MacBooks at repair stores and recycling centers are a testament to just how far Apple still has to go.

Should you lose your phone, or have it stolen, an activation lock will prevent someone from gaining access to it. For this reason, if you are returning your device for repair or replacement, or simply selling it on, you must disable the activation lock beforehand. A device that has been activation locked is unusable to anyone other than yourself.

Both Google and Samsung have their own activation lock setup, and as such have different methods of removal. For Samsung phones it is possible to enable both types of activation locks (Activation Lock and Factory Reset Protection), in which case you would need to remove both.

In most cases, a factory reset does not remove the activation lock from the device. For example, if a phone is factory reset with the Google account logged in, the phone will still ask for those credentials once switched back on. Therefore it is recommended that the account is removed before the factory reset takes place to ensure the account is fully removed.

Please Note: If a Google account password is changed before performing the reset instead of being fully removed the message "Please sign in using one of the owners accounts for this device" will appear. This indicates the Google account on the phone is now locked for 72 hours and you must wait for it to reset.

The main purpose of iCloud lock is discouraging theft. Locked devices cannot be used or reactivated without entering your passcode or your Apple ID password. This greatly reduces resale value of stolen devices and effectively deters casual theft while making organized crime more difficult.

You can turn the Lost Mode for your device or remotely wipe it from another Apple device or from a Web browser. In order to remotely lock or wipe your iPhone, you will only need your Apple ID and password.

Many users will rarely, if ever, need their Apple ID password after they initially set up their device. Rarely used passwords are easily forgotten. If you forgot your iCloud password, but your iPhone is not protected with a passcode (or you know the passcode), you may be able to reset your iCloud password/Apple ID password and subsequently disable activation lock.

The Clear Activation Lock command automatically releases the device from an Activation Locked state using the last known bypass code(s). It may be necessary to tap Back on the device before being able to proceed with activation if the device is already factory reset.

The Show bypass code command reveals the unique activation lock bypass code received by Cisco Meraki from Apple. If the device has already been factory reset and reactivated, at the Activate iPhone/iPad screen, administrators can manually enter the bypass code (without dashes) in the password field and leave the Apple ID field blank

In the unfortunate event where Systems Manager is unable to bypass an Activation Lock we suggest reaching out to Apple Enterprise Support as they have dedicated support options to bypass the Activation Lock. The best Meraki can do is try with the Bypass Activation Lock command or manually try to enter the bypass code for the Apple ID password. When these do not work we need to loop in Apple for assistance to unlock the Activation Lock on Apple's servers. You can also unlock a single device by signing in with the Apple ID.

Apple recently removed the Activation Lock status checker from its website, giving no explanation as to why a seemingly useful tool was eliminated. The Activation Lock website was designed to make sure a used device being purchased wasn't locked with Activation Lock, rendering it unusable.

The process is demonstrated in the video below. By changing one or two characters of an invalid serial number, hackers are able to generate a valid serial number, using the Activation Lock tool for verification purposes to make sure it's functional. That valid number, which belongs to a legitimate device owner, can then be used to unlock a previously non-functional iPhone or iPad.

When attempting to activate a new or recently restored device, some iPhone owners have found their devices inexplicably locked to another Apple ID account - one with an unknown name and password. The problem has been affecting iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, 7, and 7 Plus models since September and can only be fixed by Apple.

Introduced alongside iOS 7, Activation Lock has proven to be a successful theft deterrent. It effectively locks an iOS device to a user's Apple ID account and even when wiped, the device will continue to require an original Apple ID and password. Activation Lock is extremely difficult to bypass and has led to complicated hacks like the one in the video above to attempt to get around it.

Hi guys,So I had this issue. I tried to refactor the OS and it gave me the error "Activation Lock status could not be determined because the activation lock server cannot be reached." I solved the error by connecting the laptop to **my iphone's internet ** and not by house wifi. My phone and my laptop used the same AppleID so I guess that removed the lock??? I am not sure but It worked!!! Good luck.

Premium Plan users of Miradore can use the Activation lock configuration profile to control the use of the Activation Lock feature on Supervised iOS 7.1 or newer devices.

Use of the Activation Lock is allowed on Miradore-enrolled iOS devices by default, but it can be denied using the configuration profile. If you want to deny the use of the Activation Lock, make sure to uncheck the Allow activation lock checkbox before deploying the configuration profile to devices.

You can also deactivate the activation lock through the Security > Disable activation lock button on the Device page. When you do this, Miradore server contacts Apple's Activation server with proper device identifiers and disables the activation lock.

You can track the status of the action by opening the Action log tab on the device page. It may be necessary to tap Back on the device before being able to proceed with the activation, i.e. the device notices that the activation lock has been disabled.

Supervised Mode By default, a device in supervised mode does not register with activation lock. Even if Find My iPhone is enabled on the device, activation lock is disabled. See Enrolling iOS devices in Supervised Mode 2ff7e9595c
